What is swag? According to iPromo, it is company-branded merchandise given away as a form of advertising.
No one wants to wear your logo. No one cares about having your logo on their pen or random stuff. What customers care about is a quality product and good customer service. They want a product or service that can solve their problem. Nothing more. There is a lot of hype about purchasing swag. I think it’s because small business owners want to emulate corporate companies. You see Coca-Cola, Hilton, Geico, etc., pass out tons of branded swag at a company or public events.
We scoop that stuff up like it’s going out of style only because it’s free. We don’t patronize those businesses because we have a t-shirt, pens, stickers, bags, notebooks, sticky pads, or hats. The average person will use all those items and not think twice about the employee or the company that graciously gave them to us. We smile and say, “Thank you!” On to the next.
Don’t waste your money on branded swag. It is the worst form of advertising for small businesses. It will not increase revenue nor keep you at the top of a potential customer’s mind. Instead, you should use the money towards things your customers will value. Such as promo discounts/coupons, thank you gifts, giveaways, hiring assistance for better customer service, market research, enhancing your products or services, client appreciation events, better packaging, and more products or services.
All of these suggestions will increase revenue for your business over time. Don’t fall for the hype or get excited to see your logo on stuff. You’ll end up with a lot of swag hanging around the office. You won’t be able to give that stuff away. It holds sentimental value to you; only. Think about the customers and the things they value.
