It’s not through social media platforms. You probably didn’t want to hear that, but you need to know; regardless of all the social media stats people are pelting you with, those platforms will bring you a lot of looky-loos, people who look but don’t buy.

The advice seems old-school, but it will work for your business; focus on selling directly to customers. The direct sales approach will help gain awareness for your products and services. It is simple; you need to talk to people about your business. Whether in person, over the phone, by letter of introduction, via email, or through marketplaces. Reach out to people and spread the word. You cannot expect technology to do the work for you. Posting on crowded social media platforms won’t cut it for new businesses. And spending money on ads is a waste.

Create a list of your target audience and what their pain points are. Find their contact information and reach out to them. When contacting your target audience, lead with the solutions your business provides and what makes your business unique. Don’t harass people; use discretion.

You will receive lots of no’s. But if you continue, you will get someone to say yes.

Here are ways you can implement direct sales strategies.

  • Visit businesses to drop off information or go in and talk to someone.
  • Send out emails, don’t use marketing automation platforms like MailChimp or MailerLite. Send the email from your business email address. I did this with my creative services business and got eighty percent of my paid projects this way.
  • Send a letter of introduction. Make sure it’s handwritten. A short message to introduce yourself. An invitation for the person to contact you if they are interested.
  • Make phone calls.
  • Host workshops and classes so you can talk to people. Use Eventbrite and Google Events to promote webinars or in-person events.
  • List your products on a marketplace where millions of people shop daily. Marketplaces such as WayFair, Etsy, eBay, Walmart.com, Amazon, Target Plus, Bed Bath and Beyond, Market Wagon (for local sales), Poshmark, Mercari, to name a few., are great places to sell items.
